Geographically, Turceni village is situated in the south-western part of Romania Gorj County. It is located south of Targu-Jiu City - county seat, at a distance of 55 km on a county road on the right side 673A Jiu River, at an altitude that differs between 121 m and 324 m above sea level.

The territory of locality Turcrni is stretched,the most part of them, between the Jiu vally and Jilţ vally.

Situated at the convergence of the county road that connects cities Targu Jiu-Gorj district, Filiasi Dolj district, Strehaia Mehedinti district, Turceni became especially since the second half of the nineteenth century until today an important center of economic, agricol and commercial life, from the secondary Jilţ course.

Developed in terms of distance rather than urban areas in this city, went in different parts of the country and even in other countries important amount of oak and beech, wheat, corn, wine, animals, etc., especially from the landowner’s properties like Stolojanu Dinu, Neicu Calotescu, Costica Paunescu and from peasants' households and small enterprises. Transport was by cart pulled by oxen in summer or sleigh in winter, when used the departure in convoy  " with rent" to Filiasi station situated 20 km from Turceni or to weekly fairs in Turceni, Tântareni, Strehaia and Pesteana and to the beautiful annual fair  organized in the Gârbov village on 6, 7 and 8 September.

From the point of view of hydrographic network, the place is wet from the Jiu and Jilţ water stall,waters with an uninterrupted flow,  plays an important role in human life and activity in time.

Water supply of the population was made first from streams with natural drainage and was arranged little well and wells, and since 1975 in the center off village was arranged a network of supply and distribution of water over a length of 11.3 kilometers which feed 1400 apartments, 45 households of the population and 31 businesses  economic agents .

Vegetation and fauna specifity of  forest floor with oak and beech,pure or blended, intercalar with large agricultural areas and pastures have allowed people since the imemorabile time to capitalize wood , to practice agriculture and to develop animal breeding to.

As neighbors, Turceni locality is border at the east by Plopşoru, the border is Jiu River, in the north is border by Urdari village, western limit follows a conventional  line which crosses Strâmba wood, Dealul Mare  separate the village from Negomir and Borăscu , at west is located near the Borăscu ,also separated by a conventional boundary,in the south is also separated by a conventional bounds from  Ionesti commune most southern locality of Gorj county, south-west all through a conventional boundary adjoins the Grozasti common from Mehedinti district.

Today,Turceni commune consists of the following villages: Turceni, Jilţul, Murgesti, Valea Viei, Gârbov  and  Strâmba.

Villages have linear form but they also have many lanes.

Characteristic of a rural villages who belong to locality Turceni is the settlement and development of them along the valleys formed by Jiu and Jilţ riverbeds. Essential changes in the life of present villages as well as the villages from Romanian Principalities, occurred following the laws given by Alexandru Ioan Cuza  when villages have been put "on the road."

The name of villages who compose locality has been preserved for years without undergoing a basic change from the first documentation attestations.

About the administration affiliation, it should be noted that,in time have changed some villages that now comprise the locality Turceni, some of these villages were themselves centers of communes as is the case of villages Strâmba Jiu, Gârbov, Murgesti which polarize around them other villages or commun as is the case of Stolojan, Turcenii de Jos, Turcenii de Sus villages, which today form a single village called Turceni which also is the  residence of locality .

It must be point out that all these communs being limitary,  have always kept a permanent economic and cultural exchange, exchange which keep in close permanently people, offering the possibility in 1968 at the administrative reform to create the strong local administration which actually is the locallity Turceni, with an area of 7876 hectares and a population of 8483 inhabitants. 
  

On the place of locality Turceni  at the confluence of Jiu river and Jilţ river, right the road that connects Turceni locality of Branesti village was located in 1971 Turceni Thermo Power Station that was going to have an installed power of 2400MW with term to putting into use in 1985, occupying an area of 485ha of the arable land of the village.

From Jilţ and Jiu riverbed  are extracts sand and ballast used for construction into the power station, house construction, social and cultural construction,roads,etc..
